Official statistics plays a particularly important role in democratic societies, as it provides government institutions, businesses, academia, the media, and citizens with objective and impartial information on which well-founded decisions can be made and public debate on emerging issues can take place. To fulfil this role properly, official statistics must be produced and disseminated in accordance with common principles that ensure impartiality, reliability, objectivity, professional independence, cost-effectiveness, and statistical confidentiality. It must also be comparable, transparent, and methodologically sound. Official statistics serves as a mark of quality, signifying that the published information is trustworthy.
In Lithuania, the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) is responsible for the production and coordination of official statistics. Statistical data are collected through statistical surveys of households and businesses, as well as through the use of administrative data sources.
