The museum's areas of activity are to augment the museum collection, ensure the protection of the collection and initial scientific analysis, present to the public the portion of the collection prepared for exhibition, organize, coordinate and carry out the ringing of birds and bats within the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, manage, systematize, preserve and use the bird and bat ringing data accumulated by the museum, conduct expeditions and trips to collect specimens, and organize the reception of fallen animals from persons who had kept them in captivity. The museum maintains card-index and computerized records of the preserved collection, displays the prepared zoological collection, organizes exhibitions, coordinates the activities of the ringing station at the ornithological station, provides training in bird ringing and issues bird ringer certificates, encodes incoming ringing data using international ringing codes and enters them into a digital database.
