The organization collects, preserves, researches, restores and promotes museum valuables of national significance related to fine art, art and cultural history. This cultural institution, which holds the status of a national art museum, also organizes exhibitions, conferences and educational programs, and publishes catalogs and publications on art. The collection comprises approximately 250,000 artifacts – works of visual art, applied art, Lithuanian folk art, amber and jewelry items; the collection reflects the national cultural heritage and the development of art. The organization operates in Vilnius and has branches in Klaipėda, Palanga, Juodkrantė and other cities. The museum's structure comprises eleven units: nine exhibition venues (including several galleries and exhibition spaces) and two competence centers – the Museums Information Systems Center and the Restoration Center.
